Research Behind Low-Carb Diets

Several studies show a link between weight loss and low-carbohydrate diets compared to conventional calorie-restricted diets and low-fat diets. Results of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2003 showed that more weight loss occurred in the low-carb group in a randomized trial. Another study published in Obesity in 2007 showed that overweight individuals following a low-carb diet lost almost twice as much weight as those following a low-fat diet for six months. Those who were low-carbing also experienced less hunger. Research shows that low-carb diets may, in fact, be more beneficial than other diet programs.

Sneak Peak!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States and approximately 600,000 Americans die of heart disease each year. Further, The Heart Foundation noted that not only do more people die of heart disease than of AIDS and all cancers combined, but by the year 2020, heart disease will be the leading cause of death throughout the world.

These figures can startle just about anyone into paying attention to the health of their heart. Couple that with the fact that Americans are now taking the time to educate themselves on healthy lifestyles, and that many are also becoming increasingly unhappy with the side effects that prescription drugs have—the heart health segment of the natural health category is expanding. “The life extension category, in general, is growing every day, as awareness of utilizing supplements instead of drugs become a more popular choice among the educated consumer,” said Pete Maletto, president and senior scientist of PTM Food Consulting, Inc. in New Jersey. “New ingredients, such as citrus bergamot, not only perform better to change cholesterol levels than statin drugs, they often do so with no side effects. While support nutrients are helpful, the response to this relatively new dietary supplement is nothing short of amazing.”

Mr. Maletto attributed growth to extensive research backing the inhibition of cancer, arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and potentially reversing the pathological processes underlying Alzheimer’s disease. For example, curcumin may reduce deadly beta amyloid plaques in the brain. It may also assist the liver in processing viruses such as hepatitis, and other conditions.

Additionally, he said one of curcumin’s most important mechanisms of action is “its ability to inhibit activation of the transcription factor, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB), a potent inducer of chronic inflammation. NF-kB is a protein that acts as a sort of switch, turning inflammation on by activating genes involved in the production of inflammatory compounds. As NF-kB activation has been implicated in all the stages of carcinogenesis, this transcription factor is a potential target in cancer prevention and is the subject of intensive research.”

The human brain is made up of about 100 billion brain cells (neurons) that drive our thinking, learning, feeling and state of mind. According to the Society for Neuroscience, some very recent studies suggest that the strength of a memory can relate to how many new neurons remain in the brain after learning. Yet, as people grow older, brain cells diminish.

Maletto noted that the most exciting area of brain enhancement is “neurotransmitter manipulation,” which can be achieved with certain amino acids, as well as specific plant components that have active ingredients to boost the chosen path of cognitive influence. In fact, neurotransmitters have been known to directly influence dietary supplements, and recent documents have shown that as much as 20 to 40 percent have increased brain activity with dietary nootropic synapse enhancers, he explained.

Items that were once staples of the American diet since the mid-twentieth century have become offensive, as knowledge improves about what is good for our bodies and what is not. Consumers have learned that beverages can be healthy, functional and low in calories while still maintaining their thirst-quenching appeal. Sugary, high-calorie beverages continue to decline year after year, while naturally sweetened, lower calorie beverages report multiple digit increases. Consumer tastes have gone back to basics with few and natural ingredients and easy to understand labeling. But while they want more basic ingredients, consumers also look for more functional ones, including vitamins for obvious health benefits, herbs for mental well-being, amino acids for recovery, protein for weight management and even caffeine for energy.

What’s good for people is good for their pets. That’s sound nutritional advice because the basic biochemistries of humans and of the mammals that are their companion animals are much the same, said Pete Maletto, founder and CEO of the New Jersey-based PTM Food Consulting.

Maletto, whose company develops food products for manufacturers, pointed to the growing revolution toward natural and healthy ingredients in manufactured pet food. “It’s amazing what’s going on and taking place in the industry,” Maletto said. “People are reading labels and looking at products they want. For the past three years, manufacturers have been cleaning up pet food labels.”

Maletto made note of echinacosdes, natural phenols, which he described as “a mainstay from the 70s.” And he named goldenseal “a big one” especially because of the alkaloid it contains, berberine. “The raw herb doesn’t do as much,” Maletto said. “It needs to be concentrated, extracted. I actually work on delivery systems, using coding, emulsification, nano technology and the micronizing of ingredients.” He also recommended citrus bergamot in the form of an essential oil for reducing cholesterol as well as turmeric in soft gel capsules for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Sneak Peak!

For those not following carbohydrate-restricted diets, supplementation of clinically studied herbal extracts and natural compounds that can easily prevent deadly advanced glycation end products (AGEs) associated with an aging endocrine system that cause cellular damage has been bigger than ever,” Maletto said. AGEs are created through the Maillard reaction, the interaction of glucose and the unfolding proteins through a specific kind of chemical reaction that is similar to overcooking steak in the kitchen, Maletto continued. “These reactions are very dangerous in human tissues, where AGEs produce powerfully destructive oxidative stress and inflammatory conditions that lead to atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the arteries) and fatal diseases.

Eating trends have changed immensely over the past decade. Education about certain types of foods and their benefits has been rising steadily. Social websites, celebrity doctors, smartphone apps and a host of other media outlets are all promoting dietary awareness as the key to longevity and life extension—and not big pharma. Millennials lead this thought process, however, education is far reaching across generations and growing steadily as people experience key health benefits from including important nutrients in their diet.

Brands are constantly adapting product formulations to accommodate the latest trend or fad. PTM’s Pete Maletto & Ryan Dolan were recently featured in an article by Caitlin Dewey exploring why unhealthy sources of processed fat have creeped back into new product launches. Check out a quick sneak-peak below, and head over to the Washington Post to read the full-story!

Sneak Peak!

Whatever the cause, experts agree the report’s findings show how difficult it can be to improve packaged foods. That’s why Ryan Dolan and Pete Maletto, PTM’s president, encourage companies to consider the entire product during reformulations, rather than specific ingredients, such as sugar.

The best way to develop a nutritious product, they argue, is to focus on using fewer ingredients and moderate amounts of salt, sugar and fat. “Otherwise, at the end of the day, you’re just exchanging one bad ingredient for another,” Maletto said. “And consumers don’t think like that anymore. It’s a different world.”
